Pp. xi + 174. e thorny topic of Paul’s concept of the Torah drives the research in this revised version of the author’s Cambridge Ph.D. dissertation, completed under the supervision of Graham Stanton. Wilson seeks to understand above all why, after Paul’s polemic against the nomos (“Law”) in the early part of the letter, Paul nevertheless continues to appeal to the function of the Torah in the ethical instructions that follow in 5:13-6:10. (Wilson uses “Law” to signify the Mosaic covenant; therefore, I will substitute it with “Torah” throughout.) Four times Paul employs reference to nomos in this section, including the “ nomos of Christ.” Wilson proposes that these four references affirm the sufficiency of the Spirit to enable Paul’s audience to fulfill the Torah, thereby gaining its promise of blessing instead of suffering its threat of curse. Paul emphasizes this in order to dissuade the Galatians from apostatizing by way of proselyte conversion.
