(2005) Agriculture, environnement et sociétés sur les Hautes terres du Viêt Nam . Toulouse and Bangkok: Éditions Arkuiris and IRASEC. 224 pages. ISBN 2-9520184-2-1. This book is a reminder that readers interested in contemporary Vietnamese issues need to keep their French-language reading skills in shape, as there is a considerable body of good, recent scholarship which remains unavailable in English. The edited volume contains a collective introduction plus six separately authored chapters on the Vietnamese Central Highlands ( Tây Nguyên ), with an extensive collection of useful maps and photographs. The studies draw on a wide variety of primary and secondary sources, as well as fieldwork conducted in Vietnam by several of the authors. While the team of scholars consists pri- marily of social scientists (particularly geographers), each of the chapters incorporates a historical dimension which will be satisfying to students of history as well. (That said, it should be pointed out that the brief chronology at the end of the Introduction contains a number of errors.) The six chapters
