However, the author’s fondness for turning a host of time-honored assumptions upside down in order to make them truly right side up encourages the reader not to judge but to exercise a preliminary forecasting of this book precisely by its cover. It is only a slight exaggeration to say that this reviewer has spent almost as much time contemplating Casper David Friedrich’s painting, with the book’s tile and subtitle becoming an integral component of the landscape, as reading the text itself, an admission that wishes to underscore and celebrate the beauty of the written pages the painting covers. The sparse lines of a short preamble, “About the Cover” (xi), are as profound and incisive in their content as the main body of this text. J.T.
