Lutherans Respond to Pentecostalism

Lutherans Respond to Pentecostalism 288 Book Reviews / Pneuma 33 (2011) 277-324 Karen L. Bloomquist, ed., Lutherans Respond to Pentecostalism (Minneapolis: Lutheran University Press/Lutheran World Federation, 2008). 158 pp. $14.00 paper. In July 2008, a seminar convened in Soweto, South Africa, by the Lutheran World Federa- tion (LWF), entitled “Critical Lutheran Beliefs and Practices in Relation to Neo-Pentecos- talism.” This book collects the twelve essays delivered at that seminar. Presenters were pastors and theologians from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Collectively, they engaged the broad range of responses to and impressions of Pentecostal diversity. Karen Bloomquist of the LWF has edited this collection of essays that explains the Lutheran/Pentecostal dia- logue of the conference and presents the challenges for future Lutheran and Pentecostal conversations. African Pentecostal scholar, J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, grounds the Pentecostal/ Lutheran dialogue by defining Pentecostalism as a movement of the Spirit. While Luther- ans confess their belief in the Holy Spirit, Pentecostals insist that belief be confirmed with experience — gifts of the Spirit. This doctrine is held by classical Pentecostalism, neo-Pen- tecostalism, as well as charismatic movements throughout the world. Asamoah-Gyadu believes that the gifts of the Spirit must be considered essential, not optional. Guillermo Hansen, an associate http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Pneuma Brill
