Th is collective work, volume 35 in the series Studies in Christian Mission , has 21 chapters, drafted by 26 authors, of whom 13 persons have the Indonesian nationality. It sketches the birth, growth, dreams, and problems of Christianity in the pre-colonial era, during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), the Dutch period (1605-1942), and the Japanese period (1942-45), as well as in the post-colonial era of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). Th ese topics are discussed in the framework of the following three parts of the study: 1. Th e fi rst Christians (until 1800); 2. Chronological and regional surveys (1800-2005); and 3. Issues of national concern (the latter part has no dates in the heading; it mainly deals with specifi c developments in independent Indonesia). A History of Christianity in Indonesia is not the fi rst general survey of the history of Chris- tianity and Christian churches in Indonesia.
