ANALYSIS OF THE STEROLS OF THE PULMONATES ARION RUFUS, ARIANTA ARBUSTORUM, AND SUCCINEA PUTRIS by P. A. VOOGT (Laboratory of Chemical Animal Physiology, Utrecht, The Netherlands) I. INTRODUCTION Several classes of lipids occurring in stylommatophorans have been studied more or less thoroughly, for instance fatty acids, phospholipids and glycerylethers. Results of these studies have been reviewed recently (VooGT, 1972c). The biosynthesis of 3(3-sterols by representatives of this subclass has also been the subject of several studies. It was investigated for Arion empericorum (BOCK & WETTER, 1938), Helix pomatia (VoNK et al., 1956; ADDINK & VERVERGAERT, 1963), Arion rufus (VOOGT, 1967), Succinea putris and Arianta arbustorum (VOOGT & VAN DER HORST, 1972) and for Cepaea nemoralis (VAN DER HORST & VOOGT, 1972). In all cases bio- synthesis of 3p-stcrols was observed. Data about the sterols encountered in this subclass agree in that cholesterol is the principal sterol and that varying amounts of sterols (mostly ergosterol) are present. On the contrary sterols of Incillaria confusa seem to consist mainly of (3-sitosterol (TANAKA & TOYAMA, 1957). As these data are all obtained before gas-liquid chro- matography made his entrance as an analytical tool also usable for sterol analysis, they may be
