PREDATION BY LARVAL ELATERIDAE ON PUPAE OF THE PINE LOOPER, BUPALUS PINIARIUS (L.) by W.J.TURNOCK* (Department of Fisheries and Forestry of Canada, Winnipeg, Manitoba) I. INTRODUCTION The pine looper, Bupalus piniarius (L.), which occurs at endemic levels in The Netherlands, is a defoliator of pines. The species is univoltine, overwintering as pupae in the litter under the trees. During the pupal stage, from late October to May, the pupae are exposed to predation by elaterid larvae (KLOMP, 1966). The study reported herein was con- ducted to evaluate the role of predatory elaterids in the population ecology of the pine looper with particular emphasis on the possibility that elaterid predation is density related. The investigations included studies of the abundance and size composition of predator populations and of the incidence of predation at various prey densities. * Data collected while on transfer-of-work from Winnipeg to Department of Zoology, Agricultural University, Wageningen, The Netherlands. 394 II. STUDY AREA The field studies were conducted in a Scots pine plantation in the northwestern part of the National Park "De Hoge Veluwe", near Otterlo, province of Gelderland, The Netherlands. A 60 X 40 m plot was established in the plantation adjacent to the
