SHORT COMMUNICATIONS P. SELL1): Caloglyphus sp. (Acarina : Acaridae), an effective nematophagous mite on root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). Until now studies on nematophagous mites have mostly dealt with the predatory gamasids of the suborder Parasitiformes (Rodriguez et al., 1962; Sharma, 1971; Muraoka & Ishibashi, 1976; Mankau & Imbriani, 1978; Karg, 1983; Karg & Grosse, 1983; Walter et al., 1987). However some investigations have indicated that members of the suborder Acariformes also prey on nematodes, e.g. Pergalumna sp. (Oribatei) (Rockett & Woodring, 1966), Caloglyphus sp. (Acaridae) (Muraoka & Ishibashi, 1976), Rhl*zoglyphus echinopus (Fumbuze & Robin) (Acaridae) (Sturhan & Hampel, 1977) and Tyrophagus spp. (Acaridae) (Walter et al., 1986). A probable new species of the suborder Acariformes, effective in suppressing nematode populations, was recently found in a rearing unit of an unidentified Meloidogyne sp. The nematode was collected from pastures and reared on wheat and oats in the laboratory. The growth of the nematode populations was very rapid at first, but suddenly declined before the end of the second generation. Careful examination of infested plants revealed that the numerous root-knots that normally contain egg masses were totally devoured. The majority of root- knots observed lacked both egg masses and females.
