R E V I E W A R T I C L E The Sdfibhadra-Dhanna-Carita (The Tale of the Quest for Ultimate Release by S(dibhadra and Dharma), A Work in Old Gujar~ti, Critically Edited and Translated, with a Grammatical Analysis and Glossary, by Ernest Bender, American Oriental Series volume 73, New Haven, Connecticut, 1992, pp. vi -~,573. Professor Bender's edition of the SDC is a valuable resource for the study both of the early vernaculars and of the cultural context of works in this medium. The texts are difficult of access to non-specialists, because though often simple enough in structure and style they are not classical, hence they are only partly illuminated by the generations of scholarship which have provided such a powerful apparatus for the clear understanding of works in the classical languages. At the same time they are less often than the modern vernaculars subjected to study by modern linguistics. The textual tradition of an early vernacular work, the lexicon, the morphological and syntactical analyses of its language are all likely to be in an inchoate condition, so a substantial volume like this which aims to tackle all the abovementioned difficulties is bound to be a
