R G V E D A * For the Old Indian word j{ma-, the authorities give different meanings: Otto B6htlingk and Rudolph Roth, in their Petersburg dictionary o f 1855-1875 give the following translations: "creature, man, person, people (as collective singular or as plural), family, race", adding some special cases. Sir Monier Monier-Williams in his Sanskrit-English dictionary of 1872, 2nd edition 1899, understands the primary meaning o f our word as "generating" and translates it as follows: "creature, living being, man, person, race, people, subjects (also as collective singular)". Hermann Grassmann, in his still most important and undispensible "W6rterbuch zum Rig-Veda" o f 1872 indicates a primary meaning "animate being, man" and gives 15 different German translation words. For him, the singular ofj{tna- is normally collective, and further meanings are "troop, host; tribe, nation, race; the whole mankind" plus some other special meanings.
