T he results o f these works have been reported in several communications (5, 6, 7). It is certain that S protein is not the only protein in the red cell wall; another water soluble fraction, denoted as elinin, was also derived from red cell membranes by M oskowitz e ta l. (3). Elinin differs from S pro tein in having less N and more P ; it is a lipo-protein fraction, which is defined essentially by a method o f preparation rather than by a set o f exact physical and chemical properties. However, the fact that this material does possess certain characteristic properties has led M oskowitz to give it a specific name.
