C a f f r e y The lymphocytes in thoracic duct lymph and lymph nodes have often been divided on the basis of size into three classes : large, medium and small. Unfortunately, the limits between these classes have usually been arbitrarily chosen and have varied among species and among authors (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). The problem of classification by morphology alone has been further complicated by the question of whether to measure a cell’s total diameter or its nuclear dia meter, and by the fact that the size of cells in smears is markedly influenced by technique and the presence or absence of erythrocytes (4, 8).
