Davidson, E.: A cta h a em at. 23: 92—95 (1960). Grootc Schuur Hospital, University of Gape Town, South Africa By E. D a v id s o n When blood is centrifuged or allowed to sediment there is a redistribution of the red cells. Reticulocytes (1, 2), microcytes (3), red cells containing m alarial parasites (4, 5) and nucleated red cells (3) are all concentrated in the upper p art of the packed red cells. T he concentration of foetal haemoglobin in the red cells and the mean corpuscular volume are higher in the lower p art of the packed red cells (9). The present study deals with the redistribution of the fragile red cells in hereditary and acquired haemolytic anaemias. As the fragility of the reticulocyte is sub judice (6), the reticulocyte counts were correlated with the fragility tests at each level in the packed red cells. Methods Twenty ml. of heparinised blood was divided into a 12 ml. and two 4 ml. parts. The 12 ml. and a 4 ml. part were centrifuged 3,000 r.p.m. for half an hour. The super natant plasma from the 12 ml. specimen was removed and divided into 3 equal parts.
