The definition of fretting is here summed up in two phrases When the relative velocity of the two surfaces is very much lower than other forms of wear and when the surfaces are never brought out of contact and therefore there is little opportunity for the products of the action to escape. There is a chapter on methods of measuring surface topology and the area of real contact. In a list of practical cases of incidence, the author quotes a list once given of relevant aircraft components. There are 13 and he reduces them simply to bearings, couplings and joints and proceeds to consider them in their widest applications. There are chapters on the characteristics and the effect of variables, fatigue and adhesion and a major chapter on methods of prevention, covering design, lubricants, metallic and nonmetallic coatings, diffusion coatings and cold working processes. The final chapter outlines some theories together with the results of some recent experiments.
