Stresscorrosion failures in austenitic steels sometimes occur where chlorides and their necessary adjunct, oxygen, are not present. This has suggested studies of caustic stresscorrosion environment that produces cracking, and inhibitors to delay or prevent it. Type 175 stainless steel was used in the tests described below.
