Developments in UK grocery distribution are reviewed namelycentralised networks, composite networks and the increasing use of thirdparty contract distributors. Issues likely to affect the futuredevelopment of physical distribution are also discussed, such as thequality of operations, customer service improvements through utilisationof information technology, the greening demands likely tobe encountered and the opportunity for UK distribution companies toexpand their services throughout Europe. The major conclusions are foundto be that UK grocery distribution is highly developed centralised, composite systems are in place either operated inhouse by the user orcontracted out to third party distribution companies. Quality, serviceand greening issues are likely to become the tools operators will use togain competitive advantage in this highly competitive marketplace bothin the UK and throughout Europe.
