Abstract
Noting the failure of social economists to appreciate thecontext of Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramscis writings,attention is brought to the historical context of Gramscis writings bydetailing his early life and work. Gramscis thoughts on workerascendancy, labour unions, and political organisation are also received.Gramscis plans for the realisation of his ideas are presented asexemplary of worker movements in postFirst World War Italy. The fate ofGramscis factory council movement is also discussed.
