Learning within organisations tends to be organisationally driven, subject oriented and focused on content acquisition. Formal coursesreflecting traditional studentteacher roles tend to be the norm. Adultlearning theory suggests adult learners are selfdirecting, problemcentred and bring a variety of experience to the learning situation. These characteristics provide a foundation for an alternative approachto both learning in groups and the management of individual learningwithin the organisational context. The strategic approach to learnercentred development is suggested as a method of facilitating andsupporting individual development and integratingorganisationallydriven learning needs into an individual learningstrategy. Recommendations relative to learning within the public serviceare included.
