Such adownturn in demand may demonstrate increasing pressure tojustify investment in training and development. There is along established academic body of knowledge on the subject of evaluatingtraining and development. From research evidence and the authorsexperience, the sponsors and the providers of training and developmentpay scant attention to systematic evaluation of these activities andinvestments. It is the authors contention that when the marketscritical assessment of the value of training and development increasesthere will be an increasing interest in evaluation. An overview of thehistory of evaluation traditions is provided and the state of play iscommented upon. It is noted that there is a shortfall between theory andpractice. It is argued that evaluation is a worthwhile and importantactivity and ways through the evaluation literature maze and theunderpinnings of the activity are demonstrated, especially tomanagement. Similarly the literature on evaluation techniques isreviewed. Tables are provided which demonstrate areas of major activityand identify relatively uncharted waters. This monograph provides aresource whereby practitioners can choose techniques which areappropriate to the activity on which they are engaged.
