Factors explaining how Television New Zealand TVNZ managed itsway to success in the face of a radically deregulated businessenvironment are examined. To understand the scope of the challenge abrief history of TVNZ is outlined the values and problems which thathistory had produced by the mid1980s are discussed and the strategypursued to change the legacy and the results TVNZ is achieving today aredetailed. Transforming TVNZ into a modern, outward looking companyrequired a change in organisational structure reforming staffattitudes, structure and accounting systems introducing total costingand zerobased budgeting and breaking the company into strategicbusiness units. A more dynamic marketing policy was adopted giving the customers exactly what they wanted greater emphasison product differentiation, with the adoption of brandsfor its two channels and an aggressive advertising campaign usingcompany videotapes and publicity in the National Business Review. TVNZ is now the undisputed market leader, with its channels rankingfirst and second in the popularity stakes.
