ISRAEL JOURNAL OF PLANT SCIENCES, 64 (2017) 3-4 https://doi.org/10.1080/07929978.2017.1288492 This special issue of the Israel Journal of Plant Sciences, entitled “Perspectives in Fertilization and Irrigation Research,” is a fest- schrift honoring Professor Uzi Kafkafi. Uzi Kafkafi’s name is syn- onymous with research on fertilization and plant nutrition in Israel and worldwide. Professor Kafkafi has not only been a prominent researcher in the field, he was also the acknowl- edged leader and promoter behind the development of new fertilization and plant nutrition concepts. Professor Kafkafi joined the Agricultural Research Organiza- tion, Volcani Center, in 1959. He received his PhD in Soil Science in 1963 from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, on the topic of “Phosphorus Placement.” His early research focused on the evaluation of nutrient availability in soils and identifying the form of phosphate sorption to clay particles. In 1977, he was appointedheadofthe first “Research and Development Center” in Israel, “R&D South,” which brought together research insti- tutes, scientists and practicing growers from around the coun- try, for developing crops for protected agriculture on sand dunes. In 1986, Professor Kafkafi joined the Faculty of Agricul- ture of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in Rehovot, as a professor of plant nutrition
