Key PointsQuestionWhat is the incidence of police-reported experiences of being subjected to crime, including violent crime, after onset of mental illness, and do persons with specific mental disorders have increased risk of being subjected to crime compared with those without mental illness? FindingsIn this national cohort study of more than 2 million individuals, the incidence of experience of any crime and violent crime was increased among those with mental illness. The association was seen across the diagnostic spectrum in both men and women, with the strongest associations found for those with substance use disorders and personality disorders. MeaningMental illness across the diagnostic spectrum is associated with increased risk of police-reported experiences of being subjected to violent and nonviolent crime.
