Trauma, Violence, Abuse: Trauma, Violence, and Abuse: A Review Journal

Trauma, Violence, Abuse: Trauma, Violence, and Abuse: A Review Journal Sage Publications, Inc, a publisher of journals covering a broad spectrum of the social sciences, has added a new title to the literature of interpersonal violence with the inaugural issue of Trauma, Violence, and Abuse. Jon R. Conte is the editor of the journal, along with Rochelle Hanson, book review editor, Dirk Huyer, medical editor, and a 29-member editorial board. The membership of the editorial board is notable for its international scope and the prominence of its members in their respective fields. The board includes some of the most outstanding contributors to the fields of trauma, family violence, sexual abuse, and sexual assault. Trauma, Violence, and Abuse editor Jon R. Conte also edits a sister publication, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, now in its 16th year. Although these two journals have similar subject matter, they differ in purpose and intended audience. Journal of Interpersonal Violence targets a multidisciplinary audience of researchers as well as practitioners and publishes primarily empirical research reports. By contrast, Trauma, Violence, and Abuse is clearly aimed at the practitioner. Therefore its focus is on organizing, synthesizing, and reviewing the current state of the literature. The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles that are "reviews of research, conceptual or theoretical articles, and law review articles." The stated intention of the journal is to "compile knowledge that clearly affects practice, policy, and research." A review of several issues indicates that the journal is meeting this goal. Each issue contains three to four articles that summarize the current literature on particular topics and offer conceptual models for understanding these topics. For example, the first issue includes "Psychological and Environmental Factors Associated With Partner Violence" and "A Conceptual Framework for the Impact of Traumatic Experiences." The articles cite important older research as well as the latest contributions to the area. The journal's articles include specific recommendations that are immediately applicable, such as those found in "Improving the Effectiveness of Sexual Offender Treatment." Articles cover topics that are relevant to understanding and treating both survivors and offenders: "Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence: Research Findings and Implications for Intervention" and "Youth Violence: A Tripartite Examination of Putative Causes, Consequences, and Correlates" illustrate these perspectives. Articles are organized to include abstracts, bulleted summaries, and brief author biographies. The tables and graphs included in the articles are clear and easy to read. The journal has other useful features. A section entitled "Hot Topics" presents experts who debate a particular issue, such as the evolutionary explanation for rape or the civil commitment of sexual offenders. The section "Because You Asked" features expert answers to questions posed by the journal's readers. Finally, the journal has a section for reviewing books, media, and other products related to its subject. The electronic version of the journal is free with the price of an institutional print subscription, with access available through the major intermediary gateways or directly through Ingenta (http://www.ingenta.com). The unaffiliated individual subscriber does not have electronic access. The electronic journal is published in PDF, producing pages comparable to the print journal. Trauma, Violence, and Abuse is indexed in Criminal Justice Abstracts, Family Violence & Sexual Assault Bulletin, NCJRS Abstracts Database, Psychological Abstracts, Social Work Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, and the PILOTS database. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png JAMA American Medical Association
