Concerning Abortion To the Editor:— Dr. Bronstein (193: 545, 1965) writes that he is gratified by the formation of the AMA Committee on Human Reproduction. He urges that "the problem of abortion" be studied because illegal abortions are so often fatal (to the mother): and one reason for this, "history" will prove, is because contemporary physicians manifest "backwardness and cowardice." Here I remind the doctor that abortions, legal and illegal, are 100% fatal to the lives in utero. This is adequate reason for the physician to be very reluctant to initiate such procedures. Such reluctance should not be labelled backwardness or cowardice. Abortion is a personal problem, he continues, and only the mother should have the right to determine whether to continue the pregnancy. This sounds strange to me. I can think of no other situation where the right to continue living is subservient to a parent's personal problems.
