War always has been and always will be a cruel thing. The very object of war is to kill, disable, maim and starve until the result of the contest shall decide the issue by demonstrating the superiority of one army over the other in number, courage or skill of warfare. "The battle is the Lord's," but victory is not always on the side of justice. The Lord teaches, rules and benefits the children of men now, as during the time of the prophets, as often by defeat as victory. The God of battles has ways and means often impossible to comprehend, but they always lead to results beneficial to mankind. The terrors and sufferings of war are the prices paid for defeat as well as victory. The wonderful improvements made in weapons and projectiles during the last quarter of a century have made modern warfare more destructive if not less
