These changes say the editors "have been very numerous. Shortly after Sir George Johnson's death Dr. Lionel Beale and Dr. Duffin resigned the Joint Professorship of Medicine, and the former was appointed Consulting Physician to the Hospital." Mention of the new appointments follow, and the editors continue, "it is with peculiar gratification that we record here the honor conferred upon the Hospital and upon the profession in the elevation to the peerage of Lord Lister, President of the Royal Society." The volume opens with a memorial sketch of the life of the late Sir George Johnson, from the Lancet of June 13,1896, and they have appended letters relating to his life containing personal reminiscences not heretofore published.
