"OPIOKAPNISM" OR OPIUM SMOKING. With the evils attending the habitual use of opium, by the mouth and through the hypodermic syringe, we are in this country already sufficiently familiar. These forms of the abuse of opium, which have been grouped under the term "opiophagism" (that is to say, opium-eating), may be found in all parts of the country and in nearly every walk in life. That other form of opium misuse, "opiokapnism," or opium-smoking, is as yet comparatively infrequent. It is resorted to somewhat in our cities by foreigners, orientals chiefly, and by the vicious classes. If the statistics of the Treasury department are not misleading, this form of indulgence has a growing tendency. With the duty upon the drug, as prepared for smoking purposes, placed at twelve dollars per pound there was taken into the Treasury last year, $750,000.
