PROGRESS IN ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY FOR 1945 A Review Prepared by an Editorial Board of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: I. DISEASES OF GROWING AND ADULT BONE

PROGRESS IN ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY FOR 1945 A Review Prepared by an Editorial Board of the American... Abstract Growth of Bone. —Hendryson1 has written a stimulating article in evaluation of the method of estimating growth of long bones published by Digby in 1916. He attempts also to arrive at a standard mean of growth in a large series of cases. His report is based on measurements of fifty-four human femurs. Needles were passed into the nutrient foramens. Mensuration from the point where they crossed the center of the medullary cavity to the obliterated epiphysial line revealed an astonishing degree of variation. Instead of growth of the distal segment of 69 per cent, as found by Digby and generally thought to be constant, the distal femoral segment was found to vary decidedly, the greatest growth being 79 per cent and the smallest 50 per cent. The percentage growth mean for the series, however, was 71 per cent, which is surprisingly close to Digby's estimate. In projecting needles into References 1. Hendryson, I.
