PROGRESS IN ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY FOR 1944 A Review Prepared by an Editorial Board of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: XIII. Fractures

PROGRESS IN ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY FOR 1944 A Review Prepared by an Editorial Board of the American... Abstract IN 1944, the most significant articles on fractures were concerned with the use of penicillin in compound wounds. Interest in external fixation devices was apparently waning as more of the limitations were becoming apparent. As in the past two years, the largest number of articles on fractures were those from men in military service, in which war experiences were recounted. Fortunately, this will be the last year that war surgery will play so prominent a part in current medical literature. Fractures of the Upper Extremity. —Of all the articles examined on this subject, more than half described a common military injury in the upper extremity—fracture of the carpal scaphoid bones.Greenlee377 discusses posterior dislocation of the sternal end of the clavicle. Symptoms of encroachment on the trachea and the esophagus, as were present in the case reported, are of more importance than the dislocation itself. In the author's case, References 1. Greenlee, D.
