Simultaneous Submission Should Not Result in Simultaneous Publication

Simultaneous Submission Should Not Result in Simultaneous Publication I regret to inform the readership that another case of dual publication has occurred. The paper titled “Cutaneous Burns Treated With Hydrogel (Burnshield) and a Semipermeable Adhesive Film,” authored by Enzo Osti, MD (Arch Surg. 2006;141:39-42) was previously published in September 2004 in the Annals of Burns and Fire Disasters (2004;17:137-141), practically word for word. It seems the author simultaneously submitted this article, and Archives of Surgery received the manuscript June 30, 2004, and accepted it for publication on April 5, 2005. Not known to us at that time, the same article had been submitted to the Annals of Burns and Fire Disasters on February 17, 2004, and was published in the September 2004 issue. We have asked for but have yet to receive a letter of apology from Dr Osti. His only correspondence was received on March 22, 2006, in which he admitted submitting the article to both journals and did not retract it from review by us when it was published elsewhere in 2004. Because of this, we will not publish any other submission by Dr Osti for 2 years. Even an excellent manuscript, published twice, does not become twice as good. Rather, the data lose all their luster as the light then shines on the author's lack of ethics. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Surgery American Medical Association
