Abstract As Weiner states: "The major premise of this book is that the diagnosis of schizophrenia is essantially a phenomenological diagnosis, based on observable impairments of ego funcions." Around his clearly stated conceptual frame of reference of ego psychology Weiner gives a lucid integration of clinical testological data, with an up-to-date summary of pertinent research findings. In this he builds mainly on the works of his predecessors in this field, Rappaport and Schafer, which are amplified by findings of the author and others.
