Hypothyroidism and Apparent 'Ambiguous Genitalia'

Hypothyroidism and Apparent 'Ambiguous Genitalia' Abstract Hyperprolactinemia, galactorrhea, testicular enlargement, sexual precocity, and hypertrophy of the labia have been associated with primary hypothyroidism.1-6 We describe a 13-year-old girl with hypothyroidism who was referred to an endocrine clinic for evaluation of ambiguous genitalia. Report of a Case.—A 13-year-old girl was referred to a pediatric endocrine clinic for evaluation of ambiguous genitalia. She had been adopted in infancy and was the product of an uncomplicated gestation. Her weight at birth had been 3,500 g and her length, 47.5 cm. Her physical and mental development had been normal until the age of 8 years, when her adoptive parents noted onset of poor linear growth, tiredness, intolerance of cold, and rough skin. Two years before coming to the clinic she had gained 4 kg during a period of 12 months. Since then her weight had remained steady. For the past two years, she had experienced increasing difficulty in References 1. Hubble D: Endocrine relations . Lancet 1955;1-5. 2.
