Abstract This is the second edition of a book first published in 1975. Although the format remains exactly the same, there has been extensive revision of some of the chapters. The author states in the preface that in the four years since his first edition there has been a remarkable expansion of knowledge about diseases of the small intestine. As a consequence, he has felt a need for a new edition to take into account these recent developments. He has succeeded admirably in achieving this goal. The book contains 12 chapters, which can be divided into three general areas. First is a general introduction, which includes a discussion of history, physical examination, and investigative techniques. The middle section concerns itself with specific diseases, which include coeliac disease, protein intolerance, gastroenteritis, sugar malabsorption, parasites, and Crohn's disease. Finally, there are two chapters on surgical disease of the small bowel.
