Abstract The purpose of this workshop was to bring together pediatric and medical researchers to explore origins of adult disease in childhood for identification of predisposing genetic and environmental factors, improvement in presymptomatic diagnosis, and more effective preventive and early treatment measures. The concerns are of utmost relevance to current emphasis on prevention and recognition that diseases once thought strictly pediatric are now found to begin in adulthood as well, or to persist into adulthood through improved treatment. Conversely, preclinical phases of adult diseases are increasingly found to commence in childhood. Thirteen papers are presented and discussed by distinguished international participants, covering four disease groups. The first, "Renal Calculi," was chaired by C.E. Dent, who conveniently tabulates the metabolic causes. The review by R.W.E. Watts of biochemical bases, genetics, clinical features, and management of inherited metabolic conditions causing stones is good background to this section. In the discussion, early detection is
