Complications of Subrapubic Bladder Aspiration

Complications of Subrapubic Bladder Aspiration Abstract Suprapubic bladder puncture is frequently used to obtain urine for culture in infants because of the difficulty in obtaining uncontaminated specimens. Although the risk of suprapubic bladder puncture appears to be quite small, we want to emphasize that there are severe and potentially fatal complications of this technique. Report of a Case..—The patient was a 2,400-gm female infant with an Apgar score of 8 at one minute. On the second hospital day, the infant had an axillary temperature of 37.8 C. The findings from physical examination were unremarkable. The abdomen was not distended and was soft. A blood culture subsequently showed no growth. Three unsuccessful attempts at suprapubic aspiration were made. The bladder had not been palpated previously and the time of previous urination was unknown. At 4 days of age, results of physical examination were normal and the infant was discharged home. The infant was taken home and the References 1.
