Infants of Gestational Diabetic Mothers

Infants of Gestational Diabetic Mothers Abstract THE DIABETIC pregnancy and its effect on the fetus and newborn infant has been the subject of considerable interest.1-7 Diabetic mothers have a high incidence of abortions and stillbirths,4,5 and their infants have an increased incidence of neonatal problems such as idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome,6,7 hypoglycemia,8,9 and hyperbilirubinemia.10,11 An increased incidence of hypocalcemia,12,13 congenital malformations,14 and renal vein thrombosis15,16 has also been reported. In an attempt to determine which of these abnormalities are related to the abnormality in carbohydrate metabolism alone and which are related to the other complications of prolonged diabetes mellitus, the incidence of these problems in infants of gestational diabetic mothers17-19 has been studied. The purpose of this paper is to describe the clinical course and laboratory findings in infants of gestational diabetic mothers (IGDM) who have been cared for in the neonatal unit of the University of References 1.
