Abstract The current edition of this standard text on common communicable diseases has been considerably revised and enlarged, with the addition of new chapters on Coxsackie and ECHO infections and infectious encephalitis, as well as major revisions of the sections on skin infections, mycoplasmal pneumonia, and respiratory infections. The initial chapters on infection and immunity, epidemiology, and biologic and chemical prevention and treatment of the commoner communicable diseases are excellently presented and practical in nature. The transition period in dealing with diseases such as diphtheria and poliomyelitis which are seen much less frequently has been bridged by retaining good clinical descriptions for the benefit of younger physicians who have not had an opportunity to observe these diseases except on rare occasions. The bibliographies after each chapter retain a great deal of the older references, as well as fairly complete and recent additions from the newer literature dealing with etiology and treatment. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png American Journal of Diseases of Children American Medical Association
