This book was written for "A Century of Progress" as a memorial volume, commemorating the pioneers in roentgenology and the advancement that has taken place in the youngest division of the medical sciences. The book consists of a series of short articles by different authors, who present their material in a concise, authoritative manner and at the same time in the style of an interesting story. A biography of William Conrad Roentgen and of Pierre and Marie Curie tells of their discovery of x-rays and radium, respectively, and the work of the American pioneers in roentgenology is recorded. Subsequent chapters outline the earliest knowledge concerning these rays, as contrasted with what is known at present, including the physics, apparatus, diagnostic and therapeutic uses, dosimetry, protective devices and hereditary and biologic effects of x-rays and radium. The progress in the military, cinematographic and industrial use of x-rays is briefly described. There
