Abstract This small volume sets a standard of excellence for publishers contemplating the production of handbooks for the peripatetic professions. Its physical features, size, weight, paper quality, crispness of print, and clean and uncluttered diagrams place it far above the general run of portable reference volumes. It fits nicely in the hand and is not burdensome in the laboratory coat pocket or instrument bag. The logical organization of the book demonstrates the authors' perceptions of the book's value as an instructional tool, not just a companion. At the outset, the authors offer suggestions to the medical student using the handbook during his clinical rotation. They follow with a thorough and well-organized subject index, and the appendix provides useful and current information dealing with drug therapy. Their "Suggestions For Further Reading" reflects a critical awareness of quality and appropriateness of existing texts in our specialty.
