Laser Irradiation of the Stria Vascularis Abstract The cochleas of 24 surviving guinea pigs were exposed to continuous-wave argon laser irradiation for periods of one half to three seconds at power densities between 1 and 2 kw/sq cm. The stria vascularis was stained by the peroxidase-benzidine method and studied by light microscopy in acute and long-term animals. Well-defined and reproducible lesions with a width of 50μm to 300μm were observed. The acute changes consisted of central coagulation necrosis as well as surrounding zones of reversible and irreversible damage. The long-term animals showed capillary fibrous strands adjacent to an area of completely destroyed, unregenerated stria vascularis. References 1.
