Incidentally, the infallible reference is the Nomina Anatomica, on which committees have worked long, wisely, and diligently. The middle ear (Auris media, cavum tympani) is the drum. Morris' Human Anatomy (12th edition), Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body (27th edition), Dorland's Medical Dictionary, and Spalteholz's Hand Atlas of Human Anatomy all contain this abundantly documented piece of information: the tympanic cavity is the ear drum cavity.
