Abstract Human Genetics, vol 4 of a handbook series, includes the genetics of three related fields: ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and dermatology. The first 247 pages of this book by Klein and Franceschetti are devoted to the diseases and malformations of the eye. The following 100 pages by Schwarz and Becker include a good description of the anomalies, malformations, and diseases of the rhino-otolaryngologic field. As one of the authors states in the introduction, this part should be of great help to the otologist who is interested in having differential diagnostic questions answered and who wants help in genetic consulting. The otologic part is more complete, but the reader is soon aware in what "embryotic" state our present knowledge of congenital hearing loss is.
