ACUTE MASTOIDITIS MASKED BY TREATMENT WITH SULFONAMIDE COMPOUNDS: CLINICOPATHOLOGIC CONSIDERATIONS

ACUTE MASTOIDITIS MASKED BY TREATMENT WITH SULFONAMIDE COMPOUNDS: CLINICOPATHOLOGIC CONSIDERATIONS Abstract Much has been written in the past few years attesting to the general use of sulfanilamide and its derivatives in acute pathologic conditions of the ear. As conservative therapeutic agents in the treatment of purulent otitis media and mastoiditis the status of these compounds is still debatable. Fenton1 asserted that sulfanilamide was an invaluable agent and expressed the belief that operation on many "red hot" ears has been avoided by its use. Babcock2 stated that its effect in the treatment of acute otitis media is overrated. Bowers3 expressed the opinion that it increases the chance of prompt resolution by 50 per cent and decreases the chance of operation by 50 per cent. Scal4 saw no value in the drug if bone destruction exists, and Maybaum and associates5 reserved it for the treatment of serious complications.
