STAPHYLOCOCCIC MENINGITIS: REPORT OF A CASE IN A SEVENTEEN DAY OLD INFANT SUCCESSFULLY TREATED WITH SULFANILAMIDEJAMA, 110
Abstract The object of this communication is to demonstrate the value of staphylococcus antitoxin as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of an almost invariably fatal disease. Only 4 cases of meningitis due to Staphylococcus aureus haemolyticus in which the disease was successfully treated have so far been reported in the literature. We feel, therefore, that any further contribution to the subject merits attention. Stout,1 Shless2 and Dunlap3 have each reported a case in detail. Stout referred to still another case but gave no details. The therapeutic agent used in these cases was Staph. aureus bacteriophage. Our case is unique in that it is the first one reported in which recovery followed the use of staphylococcus antitoxin.4 Dolman5 referred to 2 cases of meningitis due to Staph. aureus treated with staphylococcus antitoxin. In both cases the patient died. A detailed description of our case follows. REPORT OF CASE On Jan. 12, References 1. Stout, B. F.: Bacteriophage Therapy , Texas State J. The staphylococcus antitoxin used in this case was supplied gratis by the Lederle Laboratories, Inc. 5. Dolman, C. The term "prontosil" has been applied to various derivatives of sulfanilamide. The preparation used in the case reported here was the disodium salt of 4-sulfamidophenyl-2′-azo-7′-acetylamino-1′-hydroxnaphthalene-3′,6′disulfonic acid. 7.
