Radiology Quiz Case 2

Radiology Quiz Case 2 A female newborn presented with a sublingual swelling at birth. The ultrasonogram (US), obtained several days later, revealed a 16 × 5-mm, oval, fluid-filled mass located in the right submental, paramedian region, in the floor of the mouth. The cystic formation was in contact with the omolateral submandibular gland. A second US, which was obtained approximately 1 month after birth, showed a reduction of the swelling. The results of blood tests were normal, and the patient's medical history was otherwise unremarkable. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed with T1- and T2-weighted sequences and a 3-dimensional reconstruction. The images showed a cystic mass lying in the submandibular region that was hypointense on T1-weighted sequences and hyperintense on T2-weighted sequences (Figure 1 and Figure 2). On coronal T2-weighted images, the mass appeared to divide into smaller formations close to the submandibular gland (Figure 3). The mass did not exhibit gadolinium enhancement. On 3-dimensional MRI reconstruction (Figure 4), a spiral shape was clearly seen. View LargeDownload Figure 1. View LargeDownload Figure 2. View LargeDownload Figure 3. View LargeDownload Figure 4.
