Access to Information by Databases

Access to Information by Databases Abstract To the Editor. —I read with interest the article by Michael H. Goldbaum, MD,1 published in the March 1987 issue of the Archives, on the revolution that is occurring in the ease and speed with which clinicians and researchers can obtain information by the use of databases. Of particular interest to ophthalmologists is an electronic eye journal on ophthalmology, the Electronic Journal of Ophthalmology (EJOO), which has been available on-line through the Health Information Network (HIN) since September 1986 by subscription from ICOA Inc, Philadelphia. The EJOO brings material to the user in dynamic fashion instead of the necessarily static nature of printed publications. In addition to the EJOO, the HIN also provides access to other specialty journals and to PaperChase, which is a method of utilizing MEDLINE, a database produced by the National Library of Medicine. Another item on the HIN "menu" that can be of great References 1. Goldbaum MH: Expanding access to knowledge and information .
