Abstract This festschrift, honoring the 75th birthday of Jules François in 1982, is an appropriate tribute to this ophthalmologist, who is known internationally and to American ophthalmologists because of his active participation in many of our meetings. Contributors of the nine papers came from six countries; viz, the United States (three), the United Kingdom (two), Germany (two), France (one), and the Netherlands (one). Anyone would be proud of the accolades by his former resident, A. Neetens, for this eminent clinician, teacher, and stimulator of basic research. This tribute applied Ehrlich's five "G's" for success to François: viz, Gehirn, Glaube, Geduld, Glück, and Geld (brain, faith, patience, luck, and money). François possessed intelligence and faith, had "conditional patience," the luck that comes to one so devoted to ophthalmology, and the money available for the development of the sciences in the golden sixties.
