Abstract MALIGNANT melanoma of the iris in children is a rare entity. In 21 cases of malignant melanoma of the iris collected between 1948 and 1957, Cleasby1 reported one in an 8-year-old, and this was the only case in his series under the age of 28 years. Duke and Dunn,2 in reviewing 28 iris malignant melanomas seen at the Wilmer Institute from 1925 to 1956, noted only three under the age of 20 years, the youngest being 12 years old. In 1962, Apt3 analyzed 46 cases of iris malignant melanoma from the Registry of Ophthalmic Pathology of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. He noted that there were 19 under the age of 20 years, of which five were under 10 years and 14 from 10 to 19 years. In 1961, Von Burki4 reported a case in an infant, and the same year Lunder and Landolt5 References 1. Cleasby GW: Malignant melanoma of the iris . Arch Ophthal 60:403-417, 1958.Crossref 2.
