Abstract This publication contains 71 papers by 84 authors presented at the four-day symposium at Giessen in August 1966. These authors represented 34 countries and all six continents making the meeting truly international. The papers, although short by necessity, are all worthwhile and something can be learned from each of them. Of particular interest were the reports of the three working groups who had met in Grunberg prior to the Giessen meeting. These working groups had the purpose of (1)defining strabismic terminology and techniques of mensuration, (2) to collate and discuss the various preferences in examination routines, and (3) to set up an international structure to continue these mutually beneficial discussions on a worldwide basis. This book is highlighted by the seven roundtable discussions held at the end of each session.
