Abstract To the Editor. —Our Committee's attention (Committee on Accident Prevention, American Academy of Pediatrics) has been drawn to a recent article (Medicine at Work, July 1966), suggesting that there are beneficial results if people have a chance to blow off steam and get rid of tensions through the use of fireworks. This has been called "psychotherapy with a bang."The promulgator of this illogical, irresponsible, absurd, potentially maiming concept is William E. Schumacher, MD, Director of Mental Health for the State of Maine. Let the author of this ill-advised cathartic advice look at the other side of the coin—the blindness, maiming, death, and disability that we could eliminate with adequate education and legislation and the irreversible physical and psychologic trauma and guilt that can come to all concerned after a serious accident has happened. How foolish can one get under the guise of psychotherapy?Let's look at the record. I http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Ophthalmology American Medical Association
